Journey to Thélo: Discussion Questions
Chapter One 1. Why is Auchmeros so dark? (figuratively as well as physically) 2. Peter's mother trusted the rock, "Petra," for the help she needed. When circumstances are beyond you, who or what do you trust? 3.What risks to himself and his family would Peter be taking if he had gambled with his mother's money? Chapter Two 1. What role does Law play in a society? 2. What happens when the Law is not enforced? 3. Why would Peter be tempted to join the Petra gang? 4. What would be the advantages of joining? Disadvantages? 5. Why do you think Petra, the rock, glowed? Chapter Three 1. Why did Peter's affection for his mother and sister grow while he was taking care of them? 2. Why could Tina trust the stranger but Peter and their mother could not? 3. Why did the hope of "something else" frighten Peter? Have you ever been afraid to hope? 4. Peter admired Beetle for accepting things the way they were, not hoping or trying for something better. What are the costs of hoping? What are the costs of accepting things the way they are? Chapter Four 1. Peter had two choices. Stay in Auchmeros and join the Petra gang or follow a stranger to a place he'd never seen. Name some pros and cons for each choice. 2. What would you choose? Chapter Five 1. What do you think Andrew's light is? 2. Doubts attacked Peter's thoughts as he crawled through the crevice behind Andrew. Look at these thoughts on pages 37 and 38 again. Where did they come from? 3. Why did those thoughts come to his mind at that moment in time? 4. When do doubts and fears usually come to you? Chapter Six 1. Peter's first experience with the outside was painful since his eyes had never been exposed to sunlight. Why is change, even good change, often painful in the beginning? 2. Should you avoid change because of the possible pain? 3. Page 42 "In an impulsive act of courage, Peter took his hands away from his eyes." Describe how it takes courage to face change. 4. In what ways was Peter rewarded for his courage? 5. What did Peter discover about feather clumps? 6. Imagine seeing color, flowers and sky for the first time in your life. 7. What does it mean to be satisfied? Is it good or bad? Chapter Seven 1. Page 50 "(Peter) felt sadness, a feeling he never allowed in Auchmeros." Why would he be sad in Thélo but not in Auchmeros? 2. Why did Peter want to return to Auchmeros? Chapter Nine 1. Why did Peter want to know the lifeguides? 2. In our own search to obey God's law, what kind of signs does God give us to follow? 3. Consider any deep canyons that lie in the path of your life. Is it possible to cross them? Chapter Ten 1. Peter didn't trust Phoster at first and didn't want to look into his eyes. Why? 2.
